Metropolitan Museum pulls Mohammed images?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York said several images of the Prophet Mohammed were removed from a collection and are 'under review.'

After the cowardice of Yale University Press (not publishing the controversial Danish Mohammed cartoons in a book about the cartoon controversy), a cave-in by the Met would signal a truly depressing collapse of intellectual freedom. The original reporting for this story comes from the slightly sensational NY Post, so I hold out hope that Metropolitan Museum has not really bowed to fundamentalist pressure.

People still love the arts, but they are experiencing them online rather than in person

Americans are increasingly choosing the Internet and other new media to enjoy the arts, a new national survey has found.

While many adults still like the intimacy of live theater, particularly musical theater, over the past year an estimated 47 million of them chose to watch or listen to music, theater or dance performances online at least once a week. The results of the National Endowment for the Arts survey of arts habits, which are scheduled for release Thursday, show that while many arts disciplines remain popular, the mode of delivery is rapidly changing.

The future has gone retro. Apparently the designer will be selling posters soon.

Here's the designer's online store.

Music, math, visual art, and video combine in "The Nest That Sailed the Sky"

Prompted by these intriguing visuals mentioned by Steve Silberman, I went back to take another look at the work of Glenn Marshall, and his gorgeous video for a composition by Peter Gabriel.

Definitely worth exploding into full-screen HD mode, Marshall's short film employs a programming language called Processing to render music in mathematical and visual forms. Something to get lost in for a little while...

How to score a spot on Obama's arts team

A flow chart maps the President's Committee on Arts and Humanities.
This social map illustrates what PCAH members have in common, from Harvard University to the Aspen Institute to Hollywood.

It’s not like being named the ambassador to London or Paris, but an appointment to the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities is one of the cushier rewards for supporting a presidential candidate. And the 26 members President Barack Obama named earlier this week seemed like a motley group, with little in common except an ability to raise campaign money. Vogue magazine’s Anna Wintour and Minnesota State Senator Richard J. Cohen? Yo-Yo Ma and the guy who made a pre-fab house that floats?

Disparate, yes. But these 26 private-sector appointees are intricately connected through years of leadership in the overlap of politics, arts and culture. Studying their resumes, some clear patterns and paths emerge. So if you aspire to discuss the future of the humanities with, among others, Michelle Obama (the honorary chair), read on. Here’s a breakdown of the committee members, their connections to each other and the spheres they influence.

An interesting social map of appointments I've found a little disappointing (i.e., no librarians, no humanities people, no visual artists).

For U.S.S. New York, a Journey Home

The New York Times describes the newly-christened U.S.S. New York -- a futuristic amphibious transport ship with a bow forged from wreckage of the World Trade Center. She's likely to be used by Marines and Special Forces in anti-terror and humanitarian operations. I think it is a beautiful machine.

Here is the official U.S.S. New York site. Another New York Times blog post describes the somewhat less-than-glorious history of previous ships that carried the "U.S.S. New York" name.
